The first PiliPinas Debates 2016 took place at the Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday, February 21, 2016.
All five presidential aspirants Jejomar Binay, Rodrigo Duterte, Grace Poe, Mar Roxas, and Miriam Defensor Santiago took their stands for the first time in four separate rounds of debate.
According to Rappler editor, Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas won Round 1 of the PiliPinas 2016: The Cagayan de Oro Presidential Debate.
Also in the same round, which covered topics ranging from wealth, corruption, experience in government, health, morality, and Super Typhoon Yolanda, Senator Miriam Santiago affirmed that “nobody has done very much against graft and corruption except Mayor Rody Duterte.”
Her comment made a buzz to boost keywords “Rody Duterte” on microblogging site Twitter, reaching a total of 120-thousand reach, as of 6 p.m.
Rody Duterte also won Rappler’s online poll in the first two rounds of the debate. Davao mayor got 636 or 58.56% of the total 1,086 votes cast by Rappler readers.
Rappler editors’ pick showed Senator Grace Poe as the winner of the second and third rounds of the debate.
Round 2 covered issues related to poverty and development, such as those affecting farmers and fishermen while round 3 tackled the following topics: Mindanao peace and development, illegal drugs, political dynasties, the Philippines’ row with China, and the PH-US Enhanced Development Cooperation Agreement.
