The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) opened the PBA 2015 season with a record attendance of 52,612 held today from the newly-opened Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

The opening ceremonies were aired on TV5 at 1 p.m. and also included digital clarity radio coverage on Radyo5 NewsFM stations nationwide.

The opening ceremony celebrated its milestone’s 40th season as the first professional basketball league in Asia.

The traditional parade of teams and their muses, led by stunners Ellen Adarna for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel; Ritz Azul for Meralco Bolts; Sunshine Cruz for Blackwater Elite; and Alice Dixson for San Miguel Beermen took place.

Gilas Pilipinas team players were also honored for their service to the country after participating in the fifth FIBA Asia Cup, 17th Asian Games and the country’s return to the world stage at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

This new season’s attendance topped last year’s opening, which drew some 30,000 fans in three separate venues in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

GMA News report last week said that 80 percent of the venue tickets have been sold, translating to some 35k fans already confirmed to attend, said league commissioner Chito Salud in a statement. “This is a huge number by any measure that can only become bigger as we get closer to opening day.”
