Philippines’ Gilas Pilipinas vs China will play in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup on Wednesday, August 9 as Gilas Pilipinas look to win their first FIBA Asia Cup title since 1985. Reigning champions China has 16 championship titles while Philippines has 5 since the basketball tournament started in 1960 in the Philippines.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. Lebanon local time (6:30 p.m. Philippine time) and can be watched on TV on the TV5 network in the Philippines, or online through live stream (details below).
Both teams will play their first match in this tournament of Group B, which is composed of China, Philippines, Iraq, and Qatar. China, currently at 14, is the strongest in terms of FIBA ranking while Iraq is the weakest, not one of the ranks as of August 21, 2016. Philippines is ranked at 27 while Qatar at 50.
The Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup 2017 roster is composed of Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Jio Jalalon, Roger Pogoy, Matthew Wright, Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, Raymond Almazan, Carl Bryan Cruz, June Mar Fajardo, and Christian Standhardinger. Standhardinger will be the team’s naturalized player, with Andray Blatche unable to compete due to various reasons. Blatche joined Gilas Pilipinas in the SEABA championship in Manila a few months back.
China’s roster is composed of a squad with only four members of the Rio Olympics squad. They are going to be playing in Lebanon in heady playmaker Guo Ailun, versatile forward Zhou Peng, shooter Li Gen and project Li Muhao.
According to Sports 5, China deployed a less daunting team but is still heavily favored over the Philippines. Both teams may still afford to lose once in the group stages, so long as it defeats Iraq and Qatar to play Group E.
