A car bomb explosion rocked a number of establishments in Zamboanga City on Friday, January 23, 2015, killing 2 people and injuring 54 others.
Reports said the explosion occurred at a bar across the street from a busy bus terminal in Zamboanga city, damaged nearby establishments and hitting the victims with flying glass and debris.
Many of the wounded were onlookers and passersby of the said place including drivers and passengers of some vehicles, which just happened to pass by the burning car that exploded later.
Police authorities suspected the militant Abu Sayyaf group saying the attack could have been in retaliation for the foiled prison escape of a brother of one of the group’s leaders.
The revelation came from city mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar saying that the attack was related with the botched attempt of the Abu Sayyaf group to spring out 57 of their detained comrades in a local prison facility last Monday where the group was supposed to stage bombings to divert the authorities’ attention.
This bomb explosion, which occurred in Barangay Guiwan, Zamboanga City on Friday afternoon past 3 p.m., was caught on camera by Swaib M. Daligdigan. As of press time, the viral video has been shared on Facebook for more than 16,000 times.
