Best Architecture Schools in the Philippines for 2015-2019 - with School Logos

This year’s 5-year Local Pulse Rankings ranks the 16 best architecture schools in the Philippines. No matter where in the country you’re hoping to study, the list featured universities from Luzon to Mindanao.

To help make your decision of where to study a little easier and not only reliant to a 1-year ranking and just top-performing school in architect licensure examination, a 5-year data have been provided with board exam performance (number of examinees, passing rate, top-performing examinees) as the primary factor and accreditation status, and faculty-student ratio as secondary factors.

The oldest existing university in Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus, the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, ranked first out of 114 schools with architecture undergraduate programs with an overall score of 72.26 percent. In the 5-year data analysis, UST has produced a large number of examinees (1,597), the highest in the country. It has a weighted passing rate of 84.40 percent in the architect licensure examination for 2015-2019.

The country’s premier university, the University of the Philippines-Diliman in Quezon City, was ranked second during the measured time period with a 69.94% overall score. Though UP-Diliman was performing well in the architect licensure examination for the last 5 years (2015-2019), the university has only produced 70 examinees on the average each year or around 35 examinees each examination period, which is below the PRC’s minimum of 50 examinees and with at least 80% passing percentage for the school to be included in the list of top-performing schools in the architecture board exam.

The University of San Carlos placed third after registering an overall score of about 65.09%. The Saint Louis University in Baguio City followed with an overall score of 63.64%.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Main in Sta. Mesa, Manila made the 5th rank on the list for 2015-2019, ahead of Ateneo de Davao University at 6th rank, Mapua University-Manila at 7th rank, the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila at 8th rank, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila at 9th rank, and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde at 10th.

The ranking is based on the results of architecture licensure examinations from 2015 to 2019 plus other factors including accreditation status of the program in 2019 and 5-year average faculty-student ratio to find out which schools offering programs in architecture have the most valuable degree programs within the 5-year period to produce batch of examinees with high architecture licensure examination passing rates.

The ranking uses the same performance indicators as the Local Pulse School Rankings, however, the measured time is 5 years or from 2015 to 2019. Details on the methodology are discussed here. Other possible factors that are possibly secondary variables in determining the best architecture schools in the Philippine are included in the disclaimer page. Factors such as international linkages, community involvement, employer reputation, research outputs, and research citations per faculty are not part of this study. These variables are assumed to be assessed by accrediting agencies such as PACUCOA, PAASCU, AACCUP, and CHEd, and thus they are integrated into the accreditation of the institutions.

To rank the schools, we took the weighted passing rate average of architect licensure examinations from 2015 to 2019 (40%), the total number of examinees in the 5-year period (20%), and top-performing examinees within 2015 to 2019 (10%) as the overall board exam performance, and the average faculty-student ratio from 2015-2019 (10%) and accreditation status of the architecture programs (20%) as other criteria. Note that the weighted passing rate average we used for 2015-2019 architect licensure examinations were adjusted to 60% and above (unlike the PRC’s 80%), and a minimum of 150 examinees in a 5-year total (unlike PRC’s 50 minimum examinees per examination period or 300 in the 5-year data).
