The ranking of the best medical schools in the Philippines for 2019 has been released, which currently featured only 28 out of 55 colleges and universities offering medicine programs. (READ: 24 Ranked Best Medical Schools in the Philippines for 2018)

The University of Santo Tomas is still ranked first in the country for basic medical studies with a 98.24% overall score based on overall board exam performance (70%), accreditation (20%), and faculty-student ratio (10%). University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center followed with a 94.96 percent overall score while the University of the Philippines-Manila ranked third with an 89.0 percent overall score. These universities are currently Centers of Excellence in medicine as accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (88.79%) made the 4th rank on the list for 2019, ahead of De La Salle University-Health Science Institute (85.97%) at 5th rank, Cebu Institute of Medicine (82.00%) and St. Luke’s College of Medicine–William H. Quasha Memorial (82.00%) at 6th, and Ateneo de Manila University School of Medicine and Public Health-Pasig earned the 7th spot with a 76.0% overall score.

Rounding out the remaining three places for the first top 10 performing schools are the Saint Louis University (75.92%) at 8th rank, Davao Medical School Foundation (75.72%) at 9th, and Angeles University Foundation (73.81%) at 10th.

The list of rankings is based on the results of this year’s biannual physician licensure examinations (March 2019, September 2019) plus other factors including accreditation status of the program and faculty-student ratio to find out which schools offering programs in basic medical studies have the most valuable degree programs to produce batch of examinees with high physician licensure examination passing rates.

The ranking uses the same performance indicators as the Local Pulse School Rankings, however, the weightings for the number of examinees were adjusted to reflect schools with a low and a high number of examinees and but with high passing rates. Details on the methodology are discussed here or can be accessed using this page. Other possible factors that are possibly secondary variables in determining the best Philippine schools to study medicine are included in the disclaimer page. Factors such as international linkages, community involvement, employer reputation, research outputs, and research citations per faculty are not part of this study. These variables are assumed to be assessed by accrediting agencies such as PACUCOA, PAASCU, AACCUP, and CHED.

To rank the schools, we took the weighted passing rate average of the biannual physician licensure examinations in March and September 2019, the number of examinees, and top performing examinees as the overall board exam performance, and faculty-student ratio and accreditation status of the medical programs as other criteria. Note that the weighted passing rates we used for the 2019 physician licensure examination were 80% (similar to the PRC’s 80%), and a minimum of 50 examinees (unlike the PRC’s 100 minimum examinees in the September 2019 Physician Licensure Examination).
