President Rodrigo Duterte dropped presidential activities on Sunday to watch the boxing match of Senator Manny Pacquaio with Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The president watched Pacquaio’s winning fight in his home in Davao City, as confirmed by Secretary Bong Go, Duterte’s chief aide.
Pacquaio successfully snatched the WBO welterweight title away from Vargas in a unanimous decision.
In a previous interview, Duterte said that Pacquaio always gave him reserved fight tickets so he can watch his match, but he wasn’t able to use it each time. Nonetheless, Duterte returned the boxer’s generous invitation through his prayers for him.
“Hindi pa sya champion, but alam ko na he had that miracle punch… It’s a God-given gift.”
Meanwhile, presidential son and Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte congratulated Pacquaio.
“Truly, it was a shining moment, which is a source of pride and inspiration for the Filipinos.”
He didn’t miss to congratulate Nonito Donaire as well, despite his loss to Jessie Magdaleno.
“Like a real Filipino, Donaire showed that being a champion is not only about winning battles but also about standing tall, proud, and strong for himself and for the country.”
Philippine official PNP Chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Sen. Joel Villanueva flew to Las Vegas to watch Pacquaio.
